Well, presumably they need to make up for all the Christmas Seasonal Stuff that is now in the discount baskets. And since the retailers haven’t managed to get their whole “Celebrate Martin Luther King’s Birthday with Candy!” campaign established yet, it makes sense.
What doesn’t make sense is that I was seeing these displays in early December, too.
